SEND A HURTING CHILD TO THERAPY CAMP

They say that young people are our future, and this guides our hearts and aspirations every day during the Whispering Ponies Ranch (WPR) life-changing therapy camps for children of abuse. Kids at WPR come from broken homes (and often much worse), having known extreme neglect, physical and mental abuse, violence, abandonment, and even the nightmare of being sex trafficked. WPR Camp employs screened, certified counselors who nurture these rescued kids through week-long restorative treatment, displayed through love and acceptance while teaching the necessary skills they will need to grow in confidence, healing, and survival after camp. These kids come to believe they are beautiful on the inside, that they matter to us and God…and that HE has a plan for their lives…

You slink out of bed in the morning in a sleepy but otherwise perfectly fine mood, brewing yourself a classic, American cup-o-joe like you normally do. Sitting down to your computer or television, you begin a quick surf through channels or online media while you blink the sleep out of your eyes. Initially intending nothing more than a casual check-in with the outside world before you report to work, a headline that you can’t ignore blasts its way across your screen, bombarding your senses and waking you up in the worst way: “Sex Trafficking Claims Younger Victims Every Day—Toddlers Are Common Among Victims.” The subtitle is equally disturbing: “Survival Rate Narrows Daily; Window to Find Missing Persons Now Only Eight Days.”

It’s hard to believe that summer is now behind us. I can still hear the happy-hearted flurry of children running to and from the fishpond, the horse arena, the swimming pool, the rock-climbing wall, and everything in between. That joyous, top-of-the-lungs “PIZZA” shout during their favorite meal of the week still echoes off the walls of the lunchroom, daily transforming a now-empty cafeteria into cheerful memories and the anticipation of their return. I can’t wait to see the crafts and games in the gym recommence; I look forward to watching the campers sing lots of fun songs, reenact memorable Bible stories, and put on puppet shows in the new chapel area. The activities are always such a blast for them, and the great success of sharing the Gospel with everyone of all ages during those weeks are the most rewarding feeling for everyone involved…

Children as young as 9 years old are being bought and sold for sex in America with the average age of young girls being 13. In addition to trafficking, one in seven Americans are sexually abused as children. Tragically, 1,500 to 2,000 children die each year at the hands of those who are supposed to be their caretakers. And the remainder are often (sadly) disregarded or experience a combination of these abuses. But there is hope for many of these victims through the partnership that Whispering Ponies Ranch (WPR) holds with Teen Reach and Royal Family Kids Camps (RFKC).
